Knitting Project and Yarn Record
Get a garment that fits the person it was knitted for, and be able to knit the same thing again, because the needles and the alterations are on paper.
Craft and making · CM-11
A free printable crochet project sheet — pattern, yarn and dye lot, a tension swatch table for finding the right hook, and a log of rounds worked and changes.
One page. Choose your paper size — both versions are laid out identically, so neither one gets shrunk to fit.
Print it and write on it
Fill it in type and save
The fillable versions have real form fields — open them in any PDF reader, type into them and save. Printing help.
Finish a project the size it was meant to be, and be able to repeat it, because the hook that met tension and every change you made are written down rather than remembered.
Crocheters working from a written or charted pattern, whether it is a blanket, a garment or a toy.
One page, top to bottom:
Printed under the title: One crochet project from swatch to finished piece — the pattern, the yarn, the hook that actually worked and every change you made along the way.
The hook you found, not one we guessed. No hook sizes or tensions are printed on this sheet. The hook that gets you to a pattern's tension depends on the yarn, the stitch and how tightly you work — so the swatch table is where you find that out, and the answer you write in is the one worth keeping.
Write-on lines: Project name · Pattern and designer · Made for · Started · Yarn and weight · Colourway and dye lot · Balls used · Finished size
Table, 3 rows: Hook tried · Stitch worked · Swatch measured over · Stitches counted · Rows counted · Use this one
Table, 6 rows: Date · Part or section · Rows or rounds done · Hook · Yarn or colour · Change made to the pattern
Because the hook that gets you to a pattern's tension depends on that yarn, that stitch and how tightly you work — three crocheters with the same ball will need three different hooks. The swatch table finds your answer and keeps it.
The tools and the record are different. Crochet is worked round by round from one hook; knitting is worked in pieces on pairs or sets of needles. Trying to cover both on one page gives you a worse version of each.
Get a garment that fits the person it was knitted for, and be able to knit the same thing again, because the needles and the alterations are on paper.
Get the ball band's detail onto paper before the band is lost, especially the dye lot, which exists nowhere else once it is gone.
Record the things a finished object cannot tell you later: which dye lot, which hook you really used, and how much was left over.
Pick a long piece back up without re-counting from the centre, and know how many skeins a colour actually took before you run out of the dye lot.
