What this sheet is for
Get the ball band's detail onto paper before the band is lost, especially the dye lot, which exists nowhere else once it is gone.
Who it is for
Knitters, crocheters, weavers, quilters and sewists with more materials than shelf.
How to use it
- Write everything off the ball band, then keep the band with the yarn anyway.
- Record quantity in the unit a pattern will ask for, not just the number of balls.
- Note where it is stored — a stash you cannot find is a stash you buy again.
- Mark what is earmarked for a project so it is not cut into for something else.
What is on the sheet
The layout is fixed at a size that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the A4 and Letter files are visually identical and print at full size on either. Rows are set at a height that an adult can actually write a date and a few words into with a pen — most printable tables are built in a word processor and never tested with one.
Questions
Why does the dye lot matter so much?
Two balls of the same shade from different lots can be visibly different in daylight, and the difference usually appears in the middle of a finished piece rather than on the shelf. The lot number is on the band and nowhere else.
