The same sheet, on screen. Totals and figures are worked out as you type, rows can be added or removed, and you can print it or download the completed version as a PDF. Everything stays in your browser — your entries are kept in this browser's own storage on this device, nothing is uploaded, and there is no account.

Who this is for

Work out how many packs to buy. Measure each room, add alcoves and bays, take off anything the floor will not run under, then enter the coverage printed on the pack and your wastage allowance to get packs, leftover coverage and underlay rolls.

Homeowners laying laminate, vinyl, engineered wood or carpet tiles across one or several rooms, and anyone comparing a supplier's quantity with their own measurements.

What this helps you track

  • The net floor area of each room, including alcoves and bays
  • The total area once your wastage allowance is added
  • Packs to buy, rounded up to whole packs
  • How much coverage the last pack leaves over
  • Underlay rolls needed from the roll coverage you enter

How to use it

  1. Write the project and the flooring product, then copy the coverage per pack in square metres from the packaging.
  2. Enter the wastage percentage you have chosen, and the coverage per underlay roll if you are laying underlay.
  3. Measure each room in metres at its longest and widest, and enter length and width.
  4. Add alcoves, bays and doorway thresholds as extra area, and take off fixed units, hearths or anything else the floor will stop at as deductions.
  5. Area, net area and the summary are worked out in the browser and the workbook; on paper, multiply, add the extras, take off the deductions and add down.
  6. Buy the packs shown and keep any unopened ones and the receipt until the floor is down.

Formats

  • Printable PDF (A4 and US Letter)
  • Fillable PDF with form fields
  • Fill in online, saved in your browser
  • Excel / Google Sheets workbook

The printable is laid out inside a box that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the two files are identical and neither one is scaled. The fillable PDF has real form fields. The workbook uses plain formulas only — SUM, IF, COUNTIF and the like — so it opens in Excel, LibreOffice and Google Sheets without anything breaking, and every calculated cell is grey so you can see which figures it worked out.

How to print

Download the A4 or US Letter file to match the paper in your printer, open it in a PDF reader and print at 100% — not "fit to page", which shrinks the writing space. Both files leave a 14 mm margin, which clears the unprintable edge on home printers. To print the online version with your entries in it, use the Print this sheet button, which prints only the sheet and none of the page around it. More on printing.

Questions

Where does pack coverage come from?

From the product itself. It is printed on the pack or the product page as square metres per pack. The sheet supplies no coverage figures, because they differ from one product to the next.

Why is the wastage allowance mine to set?

Because it depends on the room shape, the laying pattern and the product. A herringbone floor in a room full of corners loses more than a straight lay in a square room, so use the figure your fitter or supplier gives you.

Does underlay use the wastage figure too?

No. Underlay rolls are worked out from the net area and the roll coverage you enter, rounded up to whole rolls. Leave the roll coverage blank if the flooring has underlay built in.

What is leftover coverage?

The square metres that the packs you buy cover beyond the area with wastage added. It shows whether you are close to needing one more pack or have room to spare.
