Who this is for

One piece of content, many spin-offs. Write the original at the top, then plan each smaller piece cut from it: the format, where it goes, the angle, what needs making and when it went out. Nothing gets forgotten halfway through the week.

Creators, podcasters, bloggers and small businesses who make one substantial piece at a time and want more out of it than a single post.

What this helps you track

  • The source piece, its format, publication date and link
  • Each spin-off planned from it, with the platform it is for
  • The hook or angle each spin-off takes
  • What still needs making before each can go out
  • Due and published dates, and where each one lives

How to use it

  1. Write the title, format, published date and link of the source content in the header.
  2. Go through the source and list every spin-off it could give you: clips, quote graphics, a thread, a newsletter section, a blog excerpt.
  3. For each, note the platform, the angle it takes and the asset you need to make, such as a caption, a thumbnail or a cut.
  4. Give each a due date and write the published date and link as it goes out, on paper or in the browser version, which saves in your own browser.
  5. Tick the checklist before each spin-off is posted so every one credits and links back to the original.

Formats

  • Printable PDF (A4 and US Letter)
  • Fillable PDF with form fields
  • Fill in online, saved in your browser

The printable is laid out inside a box that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the two files are identical and neither one is scaled. The fillable PDF has real form fields. The online version keeps what you enter in your own browser and builds the completed PDF on your device.

How to print

Download the A4 or US Letter file to match the paper in your printer, open it in a PDF reader and print at 100% — not "fit to page", which shrinks the writing space. Both files leave a 14 mm margin, which clears the unprintable edge on home printers. To print the online version with your entries in it, use the Print this sheet button, which prints only the sheet and none of the page around it. More on printing.

Questions

How many spin-offs should one piece produce?

As many as it genuinely supports. A long interview may give a dozen clips and quotes; a short post may give one. The table has room for plenty, and blank rows are no loss.

Should each spin-off say the same thing?

Usually not. Write a different hook for each, suited to where it is going. The angle column is there so you decide that before you start cutting.

Why a checklist for crediting and linking back?

Because the point of repurposing is to send people to the original. It is easy to post a clip in a hurry and forget the link, and the checklist catches that before it goes out.

Is there a spreadsheet version?

Not for this one, as there is nothing to calculate. Use the browser version or print the PDF, one sheet per source piece.
