What this sheet is for

Keep each child seat's details, checks and history in one place for its whole life. A seat is retired on time and never passed on without its story.

Who it is for

Parents, grandparents and carers with child seats, and anyone passing a seat on or taking one second-hand.

How to use it

  1. Copy the make, model, serial number, date of manufacture and approval label from the labels on each seat.
  2. Write the replace-by date from the maker's label or instructions, and note where the instructions are kept.
  3. Log each recall check and each time the seat is fitted in a different car.
  4. Record any crash, drop or damage straight away, and the date the seat was retired.

What is on the sheet

2 pages, in this order:

Page 1

Printed under the title: Each child seat's identity, age and history in one place, with its recall checks and fitting checks, so a seat is retired when its maker says and never passed on with a history nobody knows.

The label and the instructions decide. No size limit or replacement age is printed: each seat's own label and instructions give them. Check the maker's or your government's recall list, and follow the maker's advice after any crash.

Questions

How old can a child car seat be?

That is set by each seat's maker, usually on a label or in the instructions, and it differs between seats. The sheet has a replace-by box for that date rather than a figure of its own.

Can I pass on or buy a second-hand seat?

Only when its full history is known, the instructions come with it and it is checked for damage and recalls. This record is the history a second owner would need; check the rules where you are as well.
