What this sheet is for

Service a marine engine by hours, and keep the impeller and anode record that matters more than almost anything else on a boat.

Who it is for

Owners of outboard, inboard and sterndrive boats, and anyone laying a boat up for winter.

How to use it

  1. Record part numbers for the impeller, filters and anodes once.
  2. Log engine hours at every service.
  3. Replace the impeller on schedule — it is cheap and its failure is not.
  4. Work through lay-up and launch lists at each end of the season.

What is on the sheet

The layout is fixed at a size that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the A4 and Letter files are visually identical and print at full size on either. Rows are set at a height that an adult can actually write a date and a few words into with a pen — most printable tables are built in a word processor and never tested with one.

Questions

Why track hours rather than dates?

Marine engines are specified in running hours, and a boat used heavily for three months may need more servicing than one used lightly all year. Hours are the meaningful unit.
