Trailer Bearing and Brake Service Log

A free printable trailer bearing service sheet — hub by hub, what the grease and bearings looked like and what was fitted, with a per-wheel brake record.

First page of the Trailer Bearing and Brake Service Log — Keep the wheels-off detail a one-line annual record cannot hold. A hub that keeps letting water in then shows up as a pattern.

What this sheet is for

Keep the wheels-off detail a one-line annual record cannot hold. A hub that keeps letting water in then shows up as a pattern.

Who it is for

Owners of braked and unbraked trailers of every kind — boat, plant, box, horsebox and caravan — and anyone who services their own hubs.

How to use it

  1. Look up the bearing, seal and brake part numbers and the torque figures in the axle maker's handbook and write them in the maker's-figures rows once.
  2. Open each hub in turn and record what the grease and bearings looked like before you clean anything.
  3. Log what was fitted and what the hub nut was set to, per hub, every time.
  4. Do the brakes per wheel, then the auto-reverse, handbrake and breakaway cable.
  5. Add a line to the Trailer Annual Service Record summarising the day.

What is on the sheet

One page, top to bottom:

Printed under the title: One wheels-off service, hub by hub and wheel by wheel — the detail the annual service record squeezes into a single line.

Your axle maker's figures go in the blanks. Bearing part numbers, grease type, hub nut torque and end float, brake shoe and cable specification all come from the axle maker or the trailer's handbook. Look them up once, write them in the maker's-figures rows below, and never guess them.

Write-on lines: Trailer · Axle make & type · Axles · Braked? · Service date · Done by · Maker's bearing nos. — inner / outer · Seal part no. · Grease type · Hub nut torque / end float · Maker's brake shoe / pad no. · Brake cable / rod spec · Coupling damper part no. · Wheel nut torque

Hub and bearing work — one line per hub — N/S near side, O/S off side

Table, 4 rows: Hub · Miles / use · Grease found · Bearing state · Seal · Fitted · Nut set to · Immersed?

Brake work — per wheel, plus the coupling end

Table, 4 rows: Wheel · Lining left · Drum / disc · Cable / rod · Adjusted · Auto-reverse · Handbrake · Breakaway · Tyre & pressure

Questions

Why are there no torque figures on the sheet?

Because they belong to your axle, and the wrong figure on a hub nut is exactly how a bearing is ruined. The maker's-figures rows are blank for the figures from your own axle maker or handbook, and the log has a column for what you set.

How is this different from the Trailer Annual Service Record?

The annual record is the year's history in one line per year, for the whole trailer. This is the detail behind the bearings and brakes line — one row per hub and per wheel — which is where a trailer that is immersed or stands all winter actually fails.
