What this sheet is for

Know what timber you have before you buy more, and price a piece from the board it actually came out of.

Who it is for

Furniture makers, woodturners, luthiers, carvers and hobby woodworkers with a rack of stock that nobody has counted.

How to use it

  1. Name the rack or store and note which moisture meter you use.
  2. Enter each board or blank with its species, rough dimensions and quantity in whatever unit you buy by.
  3. Take a moisture reading with your own meter and write the figure in.
  4. Record the supplier, date and what it cost you.
  5. When a board is used, write the project against it and what is left.

What is on the sheet

One page, top to bottom:

Printed under the title: Every board and blank in the rack, one line each: species, dimensions, how much there is in whatever unit you buy by, where it came from and what it cost — then what it was used on.

Your units, your meter. Board feet, cubic metres or linear metres — use whichever your supplier sells in and write the figure you calculated. Moisture content is your reading from your own meter; no target is given, because it depends on where the piece will live.

Write-on lines: Rack / store · Sheet covers · Meter used · Count date

Table, 14 rows: Species · T × W × L · Qty / volume · Grade / character · MC % · Supplier & date · Cost (yours) · Used on / left

Questions

Why board feet and not metric — or the other way round?

Because timber is sold both ways depending on where you are and who you buy from. The column takes whichever you use, and there is no conversion printed, because doing it wrong is worse than doing it in your own unit.

Why is there no target moisture content?

Because the right figure depends on where the finished piece will live — a centrally heated room and a garden bench are different answers. The column is for the reading you took, so you can see how a board has moved since it arrived.
