What this sheet is for

See at a glance which rooms still need a gate, latch, anchor or cover fitted. The recheck page catches the device that has worked loose or been left undone.

Who it is for

Parents, grandparents, childminders and anyone getting a home ready for a baby or toddler.

How to use it

  1. Walk each room with the sheet and write F, N or T in every box on page one.
  2. Rename any room column that does not match your home, and add a device on the blank row.
  3. Fit the devices marked T, following each maker's instructions, then change them to F.
  4. Recheck everything fitted at your own interval and whenever your child reaches a new stage, and log what you found on page two.

Recheck what is already fitted. Devices work loose, get left undone and get outgrown. Recheck everything marked F at an interval that suits your home, and again whenever your child starts crawling, standing, climbing or opening things. Fit, adjust and replace each device as its maker's instructions say.

Each recheck — tick what you looked at

  • Gates close and latch every time
  • Pressure-fitted gates still tight at the wall
  • Wall straps and anchors tight, nothing pulled away
  • Latches still catch, none worked out by the child
  • Window restrictors and socket covers still in place
  • Blind cords still out of reach after cleaning
  • Nothing new to climb on near windows or the cooker
  • Smoke and CO alarms tested with the test button

Recheck log — one line for each device found loose, open, removed or outgrown

Questions

Why mark a device N rather than leave the box blank?

A blank box could mean not needed or not looked at yet. Writing N shows the room was checked and the device does not apply there, so the only gaps left on the sheet are the jobs still to do.

Does the sheet say which devices a child needs at what age?

No. Children reach each stage at different times, and the makers of gates, latches and guards set their own instructions and age limits. The sheet records what is fitted; the instructions and your own judgement decide what is needed.
