What this sheet is for

Catch the things that go wrong quietly between services — a sign gone, a blocked exit, a wedged fire door — by walking the building and ticking as you go.

Who it is for

Anyone responsible for a building: small employers, shop and pub owners, hall committees, landlords and facilities staff.

How to use it

  1. Write the building, the date and who is doing the walk-round.
  2. Walk the route people would actually take out, not the route on the plan.
  3. Tick each line only if it is true at the moment you look at it.
  4. Write anything missing, faded, hidden or blocked beside the line as you go.
  5. Deal with the blockages the same day, and note what you did.

What is on the sheet

One page, top to bottom:

Printed under the title: A walk-round of the signs, notices and fire equipment positions — each one present, readable and unobstructed.

What the walk-round is for. A walk-round, not an inspection of the equipment itself — extinguisher servicing belongs on the extinguisher log.

Write-on lines: Building / site · Date of walk-round · Walked by

Signs and notices

  • Exit and directional signs in place along every route out
  • Final exit doors signed, and the signs not hidden by anything
  • Fire action notices in place and still legible
  • Assembly point sign in place and readable

Equipment positions

  • Every extinguisher present at its marked position
  • Nothing stacked in front of an extinguisher or a fire point
  • Fire blankets present, in their holders and pulled straight
  • Hose reels and fire points clear of stored items

Routes and doors

  • Escape routes clear end to end, including outside the final door
  • Fire doors closing onto their frames when released
  • Nothing wedging or propping a fire door open
  • Exit doors opening from the inside without a key
  • Lighting along the route working when switched on

Ruled lines: What was found, and what was done about it

Questions

Does this replace the extinguisher check?

No. This sheet looks at whether each extinguisher is in its place, signed and unobstructed. Its condition, pressure and servicing belong on the fire extinguisher check log, which is built for that.

Why are there no dates or frequencies on the checklist items?

Because how often a building is walked depends on how it is used and who runs it. The sheet is dated where you fill it in, and the routine behind it is yours.
