What this sheet is for

Trace a dead socket to its port without pulling every lead, and hand the cabinet to a new contractor without a guided tour.

Who it is for

Small businesses and offices with their own comms cabinet, and the electrician or IT contractor who looks after it.

How to use it

  1. Label outlet, panel port and patch lead with the same reference.
  2. Fill one line per panel port, including the empty ones.
  3. Record the switch port each lead goes to and the purpose in words.
  4. Note the date and tester when a run is tested.
  5. Update the sheet at the cabinet, before the door is closed.

What is on the sheet

One page, top to bottom:

Printed under the title: Which patch panel port feeds which wall socket, which switch port it is patched to, and what is plugged in at the far end — the record that turns a cabinet of cables back into a network.

One reference, three labels. Label the outlet, the panel port and the patch lead with the same reference and write that reference here. A cabinet that matches this sheet can be worked on by anyone; one that does not can only be worked on by the person who wired it. Note VLAN or purpose in words, not as a configuration to copy.

Questions

Why write the purpose in words rather than the configuration?

Because this sheet lives in a cabinet, and a cabinet is not the place for switch configuration. 'Reception desk, phones' tells the next person what they are unplugging; the configuration itself belongs with your network records.

Do I record the empty ports?

Yes. A port marked spare is a port someone can use without guessing; a blank line could mean anything.
