Find standing water, a torn vapour barrier or damp joists under the house early. Readings at the same named points show whether the space is getting wetter.

Because what a reading means depends on the meter, its scale and the material it is pushed into, and the meter's maker gives that. The sheet compares this visit with the last at the same points, which shows a change whatever the scale.
It depends on how the space was designed: some are vented, others are sealed. The sheet only asks whether vents are clear where the space is meant to be vented; ask a builder or surveyor if you are not sure which yours is.
Prove the pump still works before the water arrives, including the backup that nobody ever tests.
Get every reading down with enough context to be useful later, so a diagnosis rests on what was measured rather than what was remembered.
Show a surveyor or insurer whether a crack is growing or only moving with the seasons. The readings are taken the same way every time, so they can be compared.
Every sheet, binder, game and puzzle on Upkeep Papers is free to download, with no email and no account. Making them is not free: each one takes days of research, design and checking, and the site costs money to run. If something here saved you time, you can buy us a coffee. It is entirely optional: nothing is locked, and nothing changes if you don’t.
