Irrigation Start-Up and Shut-Down Record
Start the season by walking every zone while it runs, and end it with a shut-down on record. Faults are written against their zone, so nothing is forgotten by spring.

A free printable irrigation system record: where each valve is buried, what each zone waters, wire colours, every controller program and a log of changes.

Find a buried valve again and put a reset controller back exactly as it was. Every program, start time and run time is written down before anything is changed.
Homeowners with an automatic irrigation system, gardeners and the contractors who service them.
2 pages, in this order:
Printed under the title: Where each zone valve is buried and what it waters, how the controller is programmed and every change made, so a fault can be traced and a reset controller put back exactly as it was.
Measured from things that stay put. Measure each valve box from two fixed points that will not move, a house corner or a gate post, and write both distances. Photograph the controller's screen for each program before you change anything. Run times are your own, set from a catch-can test or your guide.
Write-on lines: Property · Controller make · Model · Stations · Controller location · Backup battery: type, changed on · Manual kept · Rain or soil sensor · Main isolation valve · Backflow device location
Also printed: Run time per program · Station · Waters · Type · Valve location · Box marker · Wire · beds, lawn, pots · spray, rotor, drip · distances from two fixed points · lid, stake · colour · min
Also printed: Program · Days · Start 1 · Start 2 · Start 3 · Seasonal adjust · Used in · weekdays, odd or even, every few days · time · % as set · months or season
Also printed: Date · What changed · Why · station, program, part · fault, season, new planting · name
One distance gives a circle; two distances from fixed points, such as a house corner and a gate post, give one spot. Lids get buried under mulch and turf, and two measurements find them again without digging up the lawn.
Run times depend on the heads, the soil, the planting and the season. Set them from a catch-can test or your guide and write them here, so the record holds your settings rather than a general figure.
Start the season by walking every zone while it runs, and end it with a shut-down on record. Faults are written against their zone, so nothing is forgotten by spring.
Set run times from what a zone actually puts down instead of the controller's default. The same test shows up dry corners and heads that need moving.
Set out what waters what, how, and how often, then keep a dated record through the season alongside the system checks that stop a blocked emitter going unnoticed.
Make sure anyone in the household can turn off the water, gas or electricity quickly, including people who did not move in with the property.
Every sheet, binder, game and puzzle on Upkeep Papers is free to download, with no email and no account. Making them is not free: each one takes days of research, design and checking, and the site costs money to run. If something here saved you time, you can buy us a coffee. It is entirely optional: nothing is locked, and nothing changes if you don’t.
