What this sheet is for

Notice the slow changes in an older horse, which the person who sees it every day is always the last to spot.

Who it is for

Owners of older horses, retirement yards and anyone managing an ageing companion.

How to use it

  1. Record monthly, on the same day, whether or not anything has changed.
  2. Weigh or tape rather than judging by eye under a rug.
  3. Note eating and quidding — teeth are the usual cause of winter weight loss.
  4. Take the sheet to the vet; a trend is worth more than a description.

What is on the sheet

The layout is fixed at a size that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the A4 and Letter files are visually identical and print at full size on either. Rows are set at a height that an adult can actually write a date and a few words into with a pen — most printable tables are built in a word processor and never tested with one.

Questions

What extra care does an older horse need?

That is for your vet, and it differs enormously between individuals. Some horses need very little until quite late; others need dental, feed and management changes years earlier. The sheet records what you observe so those decisions are informed.
