What this sheet is for

Record identifying detail and paperwork for each piece before it is needed, which is invariably after something has gone.

Who it is for

Households, collectors, executors and anyone insuring pieces individually.

How to use it

  1. Photograph each piece against a plain background with a ruler in shot.
  2. Copy hallmarks and serial numbers exactly, and note anything you could not read.
  3. Record where the box, papers and receipt are — for watches that is much of the value.
  4. Keep this sheet somewhere other than with the jewellery.

What is on the sheet

The layout is fixed at a size that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the A4 and Letter files are visually identical and print at full size on either. Rows are set at a height that an adult can actually write a date and a few words into with a pen — most printable tables are built in a word processor and never tested with one.

Questions

Does it help me work out what things are worth?

No, and it prints no values or carat weights. A valuation is a professional's opinion on a date. The sheet records what a valuer told you and when.

What will my insurer want?

Ask them before you need to. Many want a recent valuation and photographs, in a form they specify, and requirements differ between insurers and countries.
