The same sheet, on screen. Totals and figures are worked out as you type, rows can be added or removed, and you can print it or download the completed version as a PDF. Everything stays in your browser — your entries are kept in this browser's own storage on this device, nothing is uploaded, and there is no account.

Who this is for

A mark book that adds up. Name up to six assessments in the header, set the total mark available, and each pupil's row totals the marks and turns them into a percentage; the summary gives the class average and the highest score.

Subject and class teachers keeping marks for a set, a term or a unit, and tutors who want one page per class rather than a column in somebody else's spreadsheet.

What this helps you track

  • Each pupil's mark for every assessment, in the marks you set
  • The total across the assessments and the percentage of what was available
  • The class average and the highest total, worked out in the browser and the workbook
  • Which pupils have gaps, because a blank cell is a missed assessment

How to use it

  1. Write the class, subject and term at the top, and give each of the assessment header fields the name of the piece it stands for.
  2. Enter the total mark available across all the assessments you are using, in the header field, so the percentages have something to divide by.
  3. Write one pupil per row and fill in the marks as each assessment is marked.
  4. The total and percentage columns and the class summary work themselves out in the browser version and the workbook; on paper, add across and divide.
  5. Leave a cell blank rather than writing a nought when a pupil missed the assessment, so absence and a poor result look different.
  6. Print the sheet at the end of the term or download the workbook to keep with the class file.

Formats

  • Printable PDF (A4 and US Letter)
  • Fillable PDF with form fields
  • Fill in online, saved in your browser
  • Excel / Google Sheets workbook

The printable is laid out inside a box that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the two files are identical and neither one is scaled. The fillable PDF has real form fields. The workbook uses plain formulas only — SUM, IF, COUNTIF and the like — so it opens in Excel, LibreOffice and Google Sheets without anything breaking, and every calculated cell is grey so you can see which figures it worked out.

How to print

Download the A4 or US Letter file to match the paper in your printer, open it in a PDF reader and print at 100% — not "fit to page", which shrinks the writing space. Both files leave a 14 mm margin, which clears the unprintable edge on home printers. To print the online version with your entries in it, use the Print this sheet button, which prints only the sheet and none of the page around it. More on printing.

Questions

Does it turn percentages into grades or levels?

No. Grade boundaries and levels are set by your school, board or system and they change. The sheet works out the percentage from your own marks and leaves the grade to you.

What if I use fewer than six assessments?

Leave the spare columns blank. The total ignores empty cells, and the percentage is worked out against the total-available figure you wrote in the header.

Do the assessments have to be out of the same mark?

No. Each can be out of whatever it was out of; write the sum of them in the total-available field and the percentage is against that. If you want them weighted equally, convert each mark to a percentage first and set total available accordingly.

How is the class average worked out?

It is the average of the percentage column across every pupil row with a total. The highest figure is the highest percentage on the sheet.
