What this sheet is for

Know how old each helmet is and what it has been through, and when your kit was last checked. A knocked or aged helmet is then replaced, not kept out of habit.

Who it is for

Motorcycle and scooter riders, and riders' families keeping track of a learner's kit.

How to use it

  1. Copy each helmet's make, size, serial number and date of manufacture from its label.
  2. Write the maker's replacement guidance in the replace-by column.
  3. Record every knock, drop or crash on the day it happens, and what was done.
  4. Check each item of gear at the start of the season and write the date; note the airbag service date where one is due.

What is on the sheet

One page, top to bottom:

Printed under the title: Each helmet and item of riding kit with its label details, dates, knocks and drops, checks, and when it was retired.

The maker's guidance, written in. No replacement age is printed: helmet and airbag makers give their own guidance, so copy it into the replace-by and service columns. Judge a helmet that has taken a knock by its maker's advice, not by how it looks.

Helmets — details from the label inside the helmet

Also printed: Item · Make and model · Rating on label · Bought · Checked on · Service due · Retired · as printed · dates · airbag only · Jacket · Trousers or one-piece suit · Boots · Gloves · Back or chest protector · Airbag vest or jacket

Knocks, drops and damage — to a helmet or any item above, and what was done: retired, inspected, sent to the maker

Table, 3 rows: Date · Helmet or item · What happened · What was done

Questions

When should a helmet be replaced?

When its maker says, and after any impact that may have damaged it. Makers and testing bodies give their own guidance, so the sheet leaves a replace-by box for you to fill in rather than printing a number of years.

Why record a drop that did no visible damage?

Damage to the inner shell does not always show from outside. A dated note means the decision about that helmet is made on its history, and on its maker's advice, not on how it looks.
