What this sheet is for

Find the marks a collection inspection will find while there is time to act on each one. Every mark is measured against your own lessor's guide.

Who it is for

Anyone handing back a leased or contract-hire car or van, and fleet managers returning vehicles at the end of a term.

How to use it

  1. Get your lessor's return standard and write down which guide and version you are using.
  2. A few weeks before collection, walk round the car in good light, area by area, and photograph every mark with a coin or ruler beside it.
  3. Mark each one in, out of or unsure against the standard, get quotes for the ones that are out, and date any repair.
  4. Pack the kit on page two, then walk round with the collector and both sign.

What is on the sheet

2 pages, in this order:

Page 1

Printed under the title: Your own walk round a leased car in the weeks before it goes back: each mark found and how it measures against your lessor's return standard, what you had repaired, the kit going back with it, and the collection walk-round.

Your lessor's standard, not ours. Return standards differ between lessors and agreements. Judge each mark against your own lessor's guide rather than a general rule, and note which guide you used. Photograph each mark in good light with a coin or a ruler beside it.

Questions

What counts as fair wear and tear?

That depends on your lessor and your agreement, so the sheet does not print a size or a rule. Judge each mark against the guide your lessor uses and note it as in, out or unsure.

Should I repair everything before it goes back?

Not necessarily. Compare the repair quote with what the lessor's guide says it would charge, and decide mark by mark. The quote column is there so that choice is made on figures.
