Car Personal Data Wipe Checklist

A free printable car data wipe checklist: apps and subscriptions ended or passed on, phones, addresses and codes cleared from the car, and the reset done and dated.

First page of the Car Personal Data Wipe Checklist — Hand the car over without your phone, your addresses or your apps still linked to it. A factory reset alone can leave some of them behind.

What this sheet is for

Hand the car over without your phone, your addresses or your apps still linked to it. A factory reset alone can leave some of them behind.

Who it is for

Anyone selling, part-exchanging, returning or scrapping a car with a touchscreen, a maker's app or connected services.

How to use it

  1. List every app, account and subscription linked to the car, and cancel, transfer or remove each one through the account itself.
  2. Work through the in-car list with the car on, ticking each item as it is removed.
  3. Do the factory reset the way the handbook says, then look through the screens again.
  4. Count the keys handed over, revoke any phone keys and sign the sheet on the day.

What is on the sheet

One page, top to bottom:

Printed under the title: Before a car is sold, part-exchanged, handed back at the end of a lease or written off: the accounts and subscriptions to end or pass on, the personal data held in the car itself, and the reset, each ticked and dated.

Reset, then look again. A factory reset may not clear everything, and the menus differ from car to car. Follow the handbook's own method, then go back through the screens to see what is left, and cancel or transfer services through the account itself, not only from the car.

Questions

Is a factory reset not enough?

Often not on its own. Connected services, maker's apps and phone keys live in accounts outside the car, and some cars keep data after a reset. That is why the sheet covers the accounts first and a second look after the reset.

Should I keep this sheet after the sale?

Yes. If a charge, a toll or an app notification turns up later, the dated references show when each service was ended or transferred.
