What this sheet is for

Catch deck rot, a seized ramp hinge or a chafed cable before it fails on the road, with a walk-round that goes further than a same-day pre-tow glance.

Who it is for

Owners of open box, flatbed, tipping and general-purpose trailers used for anything from tip runs to towing machinery.

How to use it

  1. Work through the deck and floor first — most utility trailer failures start there.
  2. Check the ramp or tailgate operates smoothly and locks fully, on both sides.
  3. Finish with the coupling, lights and tyres.
  4. Sign and date it, and keep the sheets so you can see the trailer's condition over time.

What is on the sheet

2 pages, in this order:

Page 1

Printed under the title: A walk-round for an open utility or general-purpose trailer — the deck, the sides, the ramp or tailgate, the lights and the running gear — between the quick pre-tow glance and the annual service.

A record of what you checked, not a certificate. This records what was looked at and what was found. It is not a roadworthiness certificate and names no standard. What your trailer must be checked for, and how often, is set by your own regulator, your insurer and the trailer's manufacturer, and that differs by country — check what applies to yours.

  • Locking pins and catches engage fully on both sides
  • Ramp surface not slippery — grip strips or tread intact

Questions

How is this different from the pre-tow inspection sheet?

The pre-tow sheet is a quick, same-day check before you hitch up. This is a slower walk-round — hinges, latches and the deck itself — done before a trip that matters or at the start of a season, not every single time you tow.

Does a utility trailer need a formal inspection?

Requirements differ by country, by the trailer's weight and by whether it is used for a business — some fall under formal inspection schemes and some do not. Check with your own regulator; this sheet is a record of your own checks either way.
