What this sheet is for

Find and close the gaps that let rats and mice in, and know which ones to look at again. A numbered gap with a recheck date is easier to follow up than a memory.

Who it is for

Homeowners, landlords and tenants dealing with mice or rats, or proofing a building before they arrive.

How to use it

  1. Walk the outside first, then the inside, ticking each place once it has been looked at.
  2. Give every gap a number, and mark that number beside the gap or on a photo.
  3. Record what the gap is, what it was sealed with and when.
  4. Recheck each seal at your own interval and note whether it is holding.

One page, top to bottom:

Printed under the title: A walk round the outside, then the inside, looking for gaps a rat or mouse could use. Number every gap you find, mark the number beside it or on a photo, and record how it was sealed.

Questions

Why is no gap size given?

Mice and rats can get through surprisingly small openings, and published figures vary with the animal and the source. Rather than print a number, the sheet asks you to record every gap you find and seal it with something they cannot gnaw through, such as metal mesh or sheet metal.

Does this sheet cover baits and traps?

No. It is about keeping rodents out. Which baits and poisons may be used, and by whom, differs by country, and many are restricted to trained operators. For an infestation, a pest control company can advise.
