Turn a meadow's slow progress into something you can read back, so you know which cut, which addition and which year made the difference.
Gardeners, community groups, churchyard and school volunteers, and smallholders establishing a meadow or wildflower strip from bare ground or existing grass.
2 pages, in this order:
Printed under the title: A meadow or wildflower area from bare ground onwards — the preparation, the seed and where it came from, the sowing, and then the cuts, the raking off and the species that turn up year on year.
The seed merchant's rate, your season. Sowing rates, cutting times and whether to add a hemiparasite like yellow rattle all depend on your soil, your mix and your region. Take the rate from the seed merchant's packet and write it here, and record each cut as it happens rather than when it was supposed to.

Table, 10 rows: Date · Area · What was done · Cuttings removed · Added · Species seen · Notes
Because the rate belongs to the mix and the merchant, and the cutting time to your region and what has set seed. Both are written in from your own sources; the sheet's job is to show, over several years, what those choices produced.
It is the only honest measure of whether a meadow is working. A list that grows year on year, or one that stalls, tells you more than any amount of seed bought.

Know what is already in the seed box, and whether it still comes up, before you spend January ordering another copy of it.
Build your own record of a patch over the seasons, so what is usual there comes out of your own notes rather than out of memory.
Capture what you planned, what you actually did and what happened, which is the comparison that makes next season better and the one nobody writes down.
