Observation Record Sheet
Keep observations and conclusions in separate columns, which is what makes a record useful when somebody else reads it back.
Hobby and craft logbooks · HB-05
A free printable birdwatching log — date and time, site, species, count, behaviour, weather and notes, with room to say how sure you were.
One page. Choose your paper size — both versions are laid out identically, so neither one gets shrunk to fit.
Print it and write on it
Fill it in type and save
The fillable versions have real form fields — open them in any PDF reader, type into them and save. Printing help.
Build your own record of a patch over the seasons, so what is usual there comes out of your own notes rather than out of memory.
Birdwatchers keeping a local patch, garden watchers, and anyone who wants their sightings written down in one consistent place.
One page, top to bottom:
Printed under the title: One line per sighting — the date and site, what you saw, how many there were, what they were doing and what the weather was doing while they did it.
What you saw, in your words. No species list, no status and no identification guidance is printed on this sheet. Write down what you saw, and where you are not certain say so in the notes — a record that admits doubt is worth more later than one that does not.
Write-on lines: Observer · Patch or site · Year
Table, 14 rows: Date · Time · Site · Species · Count · Behaviour · Weather · Notes
Because names, status and what counts as notable differ by country and are revised, and a printed list would go out of date on the page. The species column is blank so you write what you saw, in whatever naming you use.
No. It is your own notebook in table form. If you also send records to a local recorder or a national scheme, keep this as the source you copy from.

Turn a night at the eyepiece into a record you can compare with the next one, with the sketch on the same sheet as the conditions it was made under.
Keep the context of a find attached to the find, so a piece in a drawer years later still has a site, a depth and a position against it.
Count things by hand while doing something else, with the categories named and the totals worked out at the end of each row.
Every sheet, binder, game and puzzle on Upkeep Papers is free to download, with no email and no account. Making them is not free: each one takes days of research, design and checking, and the site costs money to run. If something here saved you time, you can buy us a coffee. It is entirely optional: nothing is locked, and nothing changes if you don’t.
