Who this is for

A record of what was built and where the bits went. Each flat-pack item gets a line with the retailer and product code, whether the parts were counted, anything missing or damaged, whether it was fixed to the wall and where the instructions and spare fixings are now.

Anyone furnishing a new home or a newly finished room with flat-pack furniture, and households who want to find the right spare cam lock or the instructions when a wardrobe has to be taken down and moved.

What this helps you track

  • Each item assembled, with its retailer and product code
  • Whether the parts were counted before starting, and what was missing
  • Which items are fixed to the wall
  • Where the instructions and the spare fixings are kept
  • Receipts and guarantees that go with each item

How to use it

  1. Write the room, the date and who assembled the furniture at the top.
  2. Before opening the fixings, count the parts against the instructions and tick the parts checked column.
  3. Note anything missing or damaged and contact the retailer with the product code before carrying on.
  4. Record whether the item was fixed to the wall, using the fixing supplied or one suited to your wall.
  5. Write where the instructions and spare fixings have been put, and keep them together.
  6. Work through the checklist, including going back to tighten fittings once the furniture has settled.

Formats

  • Printable PDF (A4 and US Letter)
  • Fillable PDF with form fields
  • Fill in online, saved in your browser

The printable is laid out inside a box that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the two files are identical and neither one is scaled. The fillable PDF has real form fields. The online version keeps what you enter in your own browser and builds the completed PDF on your device.

How to print

Download the A4 or US Letter file to match the paper in your printer, open it in a PDF reader and print at 100% — not "fit to page", which shrinks the writing space. Both files leave a 14 mm margin, which clears the unprintable edge on home printers. To print the online version with your entries in it, use the Print this sheet button, which prints only the sheet and none of the page around it. More on printing.

Questions

Why record the product code?

Because it is what the retailer asks for when you order a spare part or report a fault. It is on the box, the instructions and usually the receipt, and it is much harder to find once the packaging has gone.

Should tall furniture be fixed to the wall?

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for each item, which often include a wall fixing for tall or heavy pieces. The column records whether it was done so nothing is left unfixed by mistake.

Where should spare fixings go?

Somewhere you will look again: a labelled bag taped inside the item, or one box for the house. Write the place on the sheet so whoever moves the furniture next can find them.

Why tighten everything after a week?

Joints and fittings can settle once an item is loaded and used. Going round once with the right tool is quick, and the checklist is a reminder to do it.
