The same sheet, on screen. Totals and figures are worked out as you type, rows can be added or removed, and you can print it or download the completed version as a PDF. Everything stays in your browser — your entries are kept in this browser's own storage on this device, nothing is uploaded, and there is no account.

Who this is for

Notice what is going on when the unplanned buys happen. Each purchase you did not plan gets a line with the time, where you bought it, what was happening and how you felt before and after, in a word or two, and a list of blocks and space for the patterns you notice sit alongside.

Anyone who finds money slipping away on purchases they did not intend to make, in shops, in apps or online late at night, and who wants to understand their own pattern before trying to change it.

What this helps you track

  • Each unplanned purchase, what it cost and where it happened
  • The situation around it: time of day, place, company, mood
  • How you felt just before buying and afterwards
  • Which purchases you would make again and which you would not
  • The blocks you have set up and the one change you are trying

How to use it

  1. Write the date you start and what you want to notice, such as late-night online buys or spending after a hard day.
  2. Add a line as soon as you can after each unplanned purchase, while the details are fresh; a word or two is enough for each feeling.
  3. Leave out purchases you planned, since this diary is for the ones you did not.
  4. Once you have a few entries, read down the columns for patterns in time, place and feeling, and write them in the notes with one change to try.
  5. Tick the blocks you have set up, and carry on over the page or in the browser version, which saves in your own browser.

Formats

  • Printable PDF (A4 and US Letter)
  • Fillable PDF with form fields
  • Fill in online, saved in your browser

The printable is laid out inside a box that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the two files are identical and neither one is scaled. The fillable PDF has real form fields. The online version keeps what you enter in your own browser and builds the completed PDF on your device.

How to print

Download the A4 or US Letter file to match the paper in your printer, open it in a PDF reader and print at 100% — not "fit to page", which shrinks the writing space. Both files leave a 14 mm margin, which clears the unprintable edge on home printers. To print the online version with your entries in it, use the Print this sheet button, which prints only the sheet and none of the page around it. More on printing.

Questions

Why write feelings down rather than score them?

A word such as bored, tired, celebrating or stressed says more about the reason for a purchase than a number does, and it is quicker to write in the moment. Over time you may see the same few words come up.

Is this a budget?

No. It sets no limits and no totals to aim for. It records the purchases you did not plan so you can see your own pattern. If you want a budget beside it, the weekly budget sheet or the no-spend challenge tracker can sit alongside.

What if my spending feels out of control?

The diary may help you see a pattern, but it is not a treatment. If spending is causing you distress or debt, talk to someone you trust, your doctor, or a free debt advice service where you live.

Should small purchases go in too?

Yes, if they were unplanned. Small, frequent buys such as snacks, coffees or in-app purchases can be where a pattern shows most clearly, and the amount column lets you add them up.
