What this sheet is for

Stop a trimmer being run with blunt, loose blades and a dry gearbox, by giving the blades their own record instead of burying them in general notes.

Who it is for

Gardeners, grounds staff and anyone with a petrol or battery hedge trimmer that gets used hard for a few weeks a year.

How to use it

  1. Fill the specification block once from the handbook and the blade itself.
  2. Log each sharpen, blade oiling, gearbox grease and blade-play adjustment with the date and hours or season.
  3. Run the before-use checks every time — a trimmer whose blades keep moving at idle is not one to pick up.
  4. Use the notes for cutting quality and gearbox noise, which are the early warnings.

What is on the sheet

One page, top to bottom:

Printed under the title: A hedge trimmer lives or dies by its blades and its gearbox. This sheet keeps the blade spec and the grease type where you can find them, and logs every sharpen, adjustment and service.

Before each use

  • Blades stop when the throttle is released
  • Front handguard and blade tip guard in place
  • Both-hands control and throttle lock work
  • Blades free of chipped or bent teeth
  • Blade bolts tight, no play between blades
  • Battery seated and charged, or fuel fresh

Questions

Why is there no figure for the blade bolt torque or grease interval?

Because they differ from one maker and model to the next, and the wrong torque either lets the blades work loose or binds them. The sheet leaves a blank for the figure from your own handbook, next to where you will need it.

Does this work for a battery trimmer?

Yes. Leave the fuel and plug blanks empty, fill in the battery and charger, and use the blade and gearbox columns exactly as for a petrol one — the blades do not care what drives them.
