Household disinfectant is not automatically safe. Disinfectants that are safe for a kitchen are not necessarily safe around reptiles, amphibians or birds, and residues matter. Use a product intended for the species, at its own dilution, and rinse as the label says.

Equipment worth checking every time
- Thermostat working and probe positioned correctly
- Heat source guarded and secure
- UVB in date and unobstructed
- Lids, locks and gaps — escapes happen through the ones you dismissed
- Water dishes clean and reachable
- Backup heat source available in case of failure
Questions
Can I use household disinfectant?
Not automatically. Products safe in a kitchen can be dangerous around reptiles, amphibians and birds, and residues matter. Use a product intended for the species, at its own dilution and rinse time.
Why check the thermostat every time?
Because thermostats fail without any outward sign, and the first indication is usually the animal. Checking takes seconds and is the single most valuable item on the list.
