The same sheet, on screen. Totals and figures are worked out as you type, rows can be added or removed, and you can print it or download the completed version as a PDF. Everything stays in your browser — your entries are kept in this browser's own storage on this device, nothing is uploaded, and there is no account.

Who this is for

Work back from the moment you serve. Enter the time dinner goes on the table and your own cooking and resting times, and the plan shows when each dish has to start, which ones need the oven and what can be done the day before.

Whoever is cooking the Christmas or festive roast, especially for the first time, with one oven, a crowd, or a kitchen shared with helpers who need to know what goes on when.

What this helps you track

  • A start time for every dish, counted back from serving
  • Which dishes need the oven and at what temperature
  • The longest lead time, which decides when cooking begins
  • The jobs that can be done the day before
  • What is done on the day, ticked as it happens

How to use it

  1. Write the serving time as an hour on the 24-hour clock and a minute, the number of guests, your oven or ovens and who is cooking.
  2. List every dish with your own cooking and resting times in minutes and the temperature from your recipe or packaging; tick oven for the ones that need it.
  3. The minutes before serving and the start hour and minute are worked out in the browser and the workbook; on paper, add cooking and resting time and count back.
  4. Read down the start times for oven dishes and check they fit your oven at once; move one to the hob or the day before if not.
  5. Tick the prepare-ahead list on Christmas Eve and tick each dish done on the day.

Formats

  • Printable PDF (A4 and US Letter)
  • Fillable PDF with form fields
  • Fill in online, saved in your browser
  • Excel / Google Sheets workbook

The printable is laid out inside a box that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the two files are identical and neither one is scaled. The fillable PDF has real form fields. The workbook uses plain formulas only — SUM, IF, COUNTIF and the like — so it opens in Excel, LibreOffice and Google Sheets without anything breaking, and every calculated cell is grey so you can see which figures it worked out.

How to print

Download the A4 or US Letter file to match the paper in your printer, open it in a PDF reader and print at 100% — not "fit to page", which shrinks the writing space. Both files leave a 14 mm margin, which clears the unprintable edge on home printers. To print the online version with your entries in it, use the Print this sheet button, which prints only the sheet and none of the page around it. More on printing.

Questions

Where do the cooking times come from?

From your recipe, the packaging or the butcher's label, and your own knowledge of your oven. The plan supplies no times, weights or temperatures; it only counts back from serving using the minutes you enter.

Why is serving time split into hour and minute?

So the start time can be worked out. Enter the hour on the 24-hour clock, for example 14 for two in the afternoon, and the minute separately. Start times come out the same way.

Does resting time count?

Yes. A joint or bird that rests after cooking has to come out that much earlier, so resting minutes are added to cooking minutes before counting back from serving.

How is this different from the big meal cooking timeline planner?

That planner is for any large meal and flags oven clashes. This one is set up for the Christmas dinner itself, with guests, ovens and a Christmas Eve prepare-ahead list on the same page.
