A walk round the house with a pen. Six short lists cover the doors, the windows, the outside lighting, the alarms, the garden and outbuildings and what to do before going away, each with a notes line for the fault found or the job to be done.
Householders doing a once-a-season check, people about to leave a house empty, landlords between tenancies, and anyone who has just moved in and does not yet know what locks what.
The printable is laid out inside a box that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the two files are identical and neither one is scaled. The fillable PDF has real form fields. The online version keeps what you enter in your own browser and builds the completed PDF on your device.
Download the A4 or US Letter file to match the paper in your printer, open it in a PDF reader and print at 100% — not "fit to page", which shrinks the writing space. Both files leave a 14 mm margin, which clears the unprintable edge on home printers. To print the online version with your entries in it, use the Print this sheet button, which prints only the sheet and none of the page around it. More on printing.
No. It checks what you have works and is used. What is enough depends on the house, the area and your insurer, and some insurers set their own conditions — check your policy rather than this sheet.
That is up to you. Many people do it when the clocks change and before any trip away; a landlord might do it at each change of tenant. The sheet has a date line so you can see when it was last done.
An empty house has different risks: post piling up, timers, keys, who knows you are gone. The list keeps those separate from the checks you would do any day.
Yes. A flat has no garden and a bungalow has no upstairs windows. Cross the list through on paper, or delete the items in the browser version.

Every recurring job in one list, with the part of the house it belongs to.
Every area checked on the same day, in the same order, every visit.
What is already in the house, and what still has to be bought or found.
Printable sheets, workbooks and tools on the same subject.
Answer the sitter's questions before they are asked, on paper, while you are still in the house and can walk them round to the stopcock.
Know how many keys exist and where they are, so you can tell whether a lock actually needs changing.
Every sheet, binder, game and puzzle on Upkeep Papers is free to download, with no email and no account. Making them is not free: each one takes days of research, design and checking, and the site costs money to run. If something here saved you time, you can buy us a coffee. It is entirely optional: nothing is locked, and nothing changes if you don’t.
