Who this is for

A record of what you changed and what the meter said. Each measure you try gets a row with the date, what it cost, the fuel it affects and your own weekly readings before and after, so the decision to keep it or drop it rests on your figures rather than on a guess.

Anyone trying changes at home, from turning the thermostat down or fitting a different bulb to a new draught strip or a shorter shower, who wants to know whether each one made a difference.

What this helps you track

  • Each measure tried and the date it started
  • What it cost to put in place
  • Which fuel it was meant to affect
  • Weekly kWh from your own readings before and after
  • Whether you kept it or dropped it, and why

How to use it

  1. Write the home and the start date at the top, then work out a baseline weekly kWh from a few weeks of your own meter readings.
  2. Before each change, note the weekly kWh for the fuel it affects; that is the before figure.
  3. Make one change at a time where you can, and write the date, the cost and the fuel on its row.
  4. After a comparable spell, read the meter again and write the after figure, then mark the measure kept or dropped.
  5. Tick off each room on the checklist once you have looked for changes there, on paper or in the browser version, which saves in your own browser.

Formats

  • Printable PDF (A4 and US Letter)
  • Fillable PDF with form fields
  • Fill in online, saved in your browser

The printable is laid out inside a box that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the two files are identical and neither one is scaled. The fillable PDF has real form fields. The online version keeps what you enter in your own browser and builds the completed PDF on your device.

How to print

Download the A4 or US Letter file to match the paper in your printer, open it in a PDF reader and print at 100% — not "fit to page", which shrinks the writing space. Both files leave a 14 mm margin, which clears the unprintable edge on home printers. To print the online version with your entries in it, use the Print this sheet button, which prints only the sheet and none of the page around it. More on printing.

Questions

Why one change at a time?

Because two changes started in the same week cannot be separated on the meter. If you do make several at once, give them one row and say so in the notes.

The weather changed between before and after. Does that spoil it?

It can, especially for heating. Compare similar weeks where you can and note the weather in the notes column, so the figures are read with that in mind.

Where do the kWh figures come from?

From your own meter readings or smart meter display. The tracker supplies no savings estimates or typical figures for any measure; everything on the page is what you measured.

Can I use it for gas and electricity together?

Yes. The fuel column records which one each measure affects, and the before and after figures are for that fuel only, so gas and electricity rows are never mixed.
