The same sheet, on screen. Totals and figures are worked out as you type, rows can be added or removed, and you can print it or download the completed version as a PDF. Everything stays in your browser — your entries are kept in this browser's own storage on this device, nothing is uploaded, and there is no account.

Who this is for

A month of daily kWh in one place. Copy each day's electricity and gas figures from the smart meter display or app, and the log costs every day at the unit rates and standing charges you enter from your own bill, then totals the month.

Households with a smart meter who want a record they control, people checking a bill against what the display showed, and anyone trying to see which days of the week cost the most.

What this helps you track

  • Electricity and gas kWh for every day of the month
  • The cost of each day at your own unit rates and standing charges
  • Month totals for kWh and cost
  • The average daily electricity use
  • Notes on the days that stand out

How to use it

  1. Write the month and copy your electricity and gas unit rates and daily standing charges from your latest bill or tariff details.
  2. Each day, read yesterday's electricity and gas kWh from the in-home display or app and write them on a new row.
  3. Leave the gas column blank if you have no gas supply, and set its rate and standing charge to nothing.
  4. The cost per day and the summary are worked out in the browser and the workbook; on paper, multiply each kWh by its rate and add the standing charges.
  5. Use the notes column for anything unusual, such as guests, an away day or the washing done in one go, and start a new sheet each month.

Formats

  • Printable PDF (A4 and US Letter)
  • Fillable PDF with form fields
  • Fill in online, saved in your browser
  • Excel / Google Sheets workbook

The printable is laid out inside a box that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the two files are identical and neither one is scaled. The fillable PDF has real form fields. The workbook uses plain formulas only — SUM, IF, COUNTIF and the like — so it opens in Excel, LibreOffice and Google Sheets without anything breaking, and every calculated cell is grey so you can see which figures it worked out.

How to print

Download the A4 or US Letter file to match the paper in your printer, open it in a PDF reader and print at 100% — not "fit to page", which shrinks the writing space. Both files leave a 14 mm margin, which clears the unprintable edge on home printers. To print the online version with your entries in it, use the Print this sheet button, which prints only the sheet and none of the page around it. More on printing.

Questions

Where do the rates come from?

From your own bill, tariff details or supplier account. The log supplies no rates or standing charges; if yours change mid-month, start a new sheet from the date they change.

Why does a day with no gas still show a gas cost?

Because the standing charge is paid every day whatever you use. If you have no gas supply at all, leave the gas unit rate and standing charge fields empty.

Why will my totals differ from the bill?

Bills can include adjustments, credits, tax and period dates that do not match the calendar month. The log is a check on usage and an estimate of cost, not a replacement for the bill.

Can I record meter readings instead of daily kWh?

This log takes daily kWh as the display shows it. If you read the meter register instead, the electricity meter reading usage calculator works out kWh between readings for you.
