Who this is for

A line for every useful conversation. Each row holds who it was, where they work, how and when you met, what you talked about, what you said you would do — ticked when done — and when to be in touch again.

People building a professional network, looking for work, starting out as freelancers, or simply trying to remember who they met at the last event and what they promised to send.

What this helps you track

  • Who you have met, where they work and how you came to meet
  • What you talked about, so the next conversation picks up where the last left off
  • What you promised — an introduction, a document, a call — and whether it has been done
  • When to be in touch next, so the contact does not go cold

How to use it

  1. Write your name and the period the sheet covers at the top.
  2. Add a row after each conversation worth remembering: the name, the organisation, how you met and the date.
  3. Write what you discussed in a line — the topic, what they are working on, what they are looking for.
  4. If you promised anything, write it down and tick the column when it is done. That promise kept is most of what networking is.
  5. Put a date in the next-contact column and glance down it once a week.
  6. Keep old sheets: the person you met two years ago is often the one who matters now.

Formats

  • Printable PDF (A4 and US Letter)
  • Fillable PDF with form fields
  • Fill in online, saved in your browser

The printable is laid out inside a box that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the two files are identical and neither one is scaled. The fillable PDF has real form fields. The online version keeps what you enter in your own browser and builds the completed PDF on your device.

How to print

Download the A4 or US Letter file to match the paper in your printer, open it in a PDF reader and print at 100% — not "fit to page", which shrinks the writing space. Both files leave a 14 mm margin, which clears the unprintable edge on home printers. To print the online version with your entries in it, use the Print this sheet button, which prints only the sheet and none of the page around it. More on printing.

Questions

Is this the same as a customer or client list?

No. A client list is about people who pay you; this is about people you know. Some rows will move to a client list in time, and that is the point.

What if I met someone online rather than in person?

The how-we-met column takes anything — a forum, a message, a conference call, a mutual friend. The rest of the row is the same.

How much should I write in the discussed column?

Enough to start the next conversation without asking what they do again. A line is usually plenty; the notes area is there for more.

Where does the browser version keep this?

In your own browser on this device. It is not sent anywhere, so the names and notes stay with you. Download a completed PDF if you want a copy elsewhere.
