Who this is for

A routine built from your day, not someone else's. The sheet starts with the things that are already fixed — work, school runs, a shift, a train — then gives you room to name the blocks you want round them, say what goes in each and why, and be honest about what usually gets in the way.

Anyone whose days have drifted — after a change of job, a new baby, a move, a spell of working from home — and anyone who has read about the perfect morning and would rather design one that fits their own.

What this helps you track

  • The parts of the day that cannot move, written down so the rest is planned round them
  • The blocks you want in a day, in your own names for them
  • What each block is actually for, which is what keeps it there
  • The things that usually derail the plan, and what you could do about each

How to use it

  1. Write the date and, at the top, what you want your days to have more of — that is the point of the exercise.
  2. List the anchors first: everything in an ordinary day that is fixed by someone or something else. Write when each happens in your own words, and tick the ones that could move if they had to.
  3. Name the blocks you want round the anchors — a slow start, a walk, a proper lunch, an hour of nothing — and say what goes in each and why it matters to you.
  4. Fill the last table with what gets in the way: the phone, the late finish, the second coffee that turns into the evening. Say when it tends to happen and what you could do instead.
  5. Try the routine for a week, then come back to the sheet and cross out what did not survive contact with a Tuesday.

Formats

  • Printable PDF (A4 and US Letter)
  • Fillable PDF with form fields
  • Fill in online, saved in your browser

The printable is laid out inside a box that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the two files are identical and neither one is scaled. The fillable PDF has real form fields. The online version keeps what you enter in your own browser and builds the completed PDF on your device.

How to print

Download the A4 or US Letter file to match the paper in your printer, open it in a PDF reader and print at 100% — not "fit to page", which shrinks the writing space. Both files leave a 14 mm margin, which clears the unprintable edge on home printers. To print the online version with your entries in it, use the Print this sheet button, which prints only the sheet and none of the page around it. More on printing.

Questions

Why are there no times on the sheet?

Because your day does not start when ours does. Every time on the sheet is one you write, in whatever form suits you — a clock time, 'after the school run', 'before it gets dark'.

What counts as an anchor?

Anything you cannot easily move: a start time, a shift, a school run, a medication time, a dog that needs walking, a train. The routine is built in the gaps between them, so getting the anchors right matters more than the rest.

What if my days are all different?

Fill in one sheet per kind of day — a work day, a day off, a day with the children — rather than trying to make one routine cover all of them. Two honest sheets are better than one aspirational one.

Is this a productivity system?

No. It is a page for noticing what is fixed, deciding what you want round it and being honest about what gets in the way. What you do with that is yours.
