Who this is for

What gets unpacked first. Rooms and boxes are ranked from day one to later, so the new home works from the first night and the rest is done in an order you chose rather than whatever box is nearest.

Households facing a house full of boxes, especially with children, pets or work starting straight after the move.

What this helps you track

  • Which boxes must be open on day one
  • What can wait for the first week, the first month or later
  • Why each room is in the order it is
  • Who is unpacking what, and when it was finished
  • Room-by-room progress, from boxes in to empties cleared

How to use it

  1. Write the move-in date and the date you want everything unpacked by.
  2. Before the move, list each room with its box numbers and give it a priority: day one, first week, first month or later.
  3. Note the reason for each priority, such as beds for the first night or a desk needed for work, and put a name against it.
  4. After the move, fill in the unpacked date and tick when the empty boxes are cleared out.
  5. Use the progress grid to tick each room through its stages so everyone can see what is left.

Formats

  • Printable PDF (A4 and US Letter)
  • Fillable PDF with form fields
  • Fill in online, saved in your browser

The printable is laid out inside a box that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the two files are identical and neither one is scaled. The fillable PDF has real form fields. The online version keeps what you enter in your own browser and builds the completed PDF on your device.

How to print

Download the A4 or US Letter file to match the paper in your printer, open it in a PDF reader and print at 100% — not "fit to page", which shrinks the writing space. Both files leave a 14 mm margin, which clears the unprintable edge on home printers. To print the online version with your entries in it, use the Print this sheet button, which prints only the sheet and none of the page around it. More on printing.

Questions

What usually counts as day one?

Whatever the household cannot manage a night without: beds and bedding, the kettle and a few plates, toiletries, medication and anything a child or pet needs. The order is yours; the sheet only records it.

Why record box numbers?

If boxes were numbered when packed, the numbers tell you which ones to open first without reading every label. The moving inventory and box log is a good partner for numbering them.

What are the progress grid columns for?

They mark each room's stages: boxes in the right room, essentials out, everything unpacked, put away and empties removed. A room is finished when the row is fully ticked.
