Who this is for

Split the house bills fairly and settle up. You list the rent and shared bills for the period and who paid each, give every housemate their units on the basis you agreed, and the sheet works out each person's share and who owes whom.

People in a house or flat share, whether the bills are split evenly or weighted by room size or time spent in the house.

What this helps you track

  • Every shared bill for the period and who paid it
  • Each bill's equal share per head, for quick reference
  • Each housemate's share on the agreed basis
  • What each person has already paid towards the bills
  • The net amount each person owes or is owed

How to use it

  1. Write the address, the period and the number of housemates, and agree the split basis: equal, room size or days present.
  2. List the rent and each shared bill with its total and who paid it; the equal share column is worked out for you.
  3. Give each housemate their units: 1 each for an equal split, room area for room size, or nights present. Enter the total of all units in the header.
  4. Copy the bills total from the table into the header, then enter what each person has already paid towards the bills.
  5. The share and net columns are worked out in the browser and workbook; a positive net is owed to that person, a negative net is what they owe.

Formats

  • Printable PDF (A4 and US Letter)
  • Fillable PDF with form fields
  • Fill in online, saved in your browser
  • Excel / Google Sheets workbook

The printable is laid out inside a box that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the two files are identical and neither one is scaled. The fillable PDF has real form fields. The workbook uses plain formulas only — SUM, IF, COUNTIF and the like — so it opens in Excel, LibreOffice and Google Sheets without anything breaking, and every calculated cell is grey so you can see which figures it worked out.

How to print

Download the A4 or US Letter file to match the paper in your printer, open it in a PDF reader and print at 100% — not "fit to page", which shrinks the writing space. Both files leave a 14 mm margin, which clears the unprintable edge on home printers. To print the online version with your entries in it, use the Print this sheet button, which prints only the sheet and none of the page around it. More on printing.

Questions

Which split basis is fairest?

Whichever the house agrees. Equal suits similar rooms and shared use; room size suits rent where rooms differ; days present suits bills driven by use. Some houses use one basis for rent and another for bills, on two sheets.

What are units?

Whatever you are splitting by: 1 per person for an equal split, square metres or square feet for room size, or nights in the house for days present. Each share is that person's units divided by the total.

How do we settle up?

Anyone with a negative net pays that amount; anyone with a positive net receives it. The nets add up to zero when every bill and payment has been entered.

Someone moved out mid-period. What now?

Use days present as the basis, or give that person units for the part of the period they were there, and note the dates.
