The same sheet, on screen. Totals and figures are worked out as you type, rows can be added or removed, and you can print it or download the completed version as a PDF. Who this is for

A record of private practice, kept apart from paid lessons. Each drive with a parent or other supervising driver gets a line with its length, the roads and conditions, the skills worked on and how confident the learner felt.

Learner drivers practising with a parent, relative or friend between lessons, and the supervising drivers who want to see what has been covered and what has not.

What this helps you track

  • How long each practice drive lasted and the running total of hours
  • The kinds of road driven on and the weather and light
  • Hours driven in the dark
  • The skills practised on each drive
  • The learner's own confidence, and hours still to go to their own target

How to use it

  1. Write the learner, the supervising driver, the vehicle and its insurance reference at the top, with the learner's own target hours if they have set one.
  2. After each drive, write the date, the minutes driven, the route or area and the skills practised.
  3. Pick the main road type, the weather and the light, and give a confidence score from one to five.
  4. The hours, running total and dark hours are worked out in the browser and the workbook; on paper, divide the minutes by sixty.
  5. Filter by road type or skill in the workbook to spot what has had little practice, and share the sheet with the instructor.
  6. Check the rules where you are about who may supervise, the vehicle and insurance before every drive.

Formats

  • Printable PDF (A4 and US Letter)
  • Fillable PDF with form fields
  • Fill in online, saved in your browser
  • Excel / Google Sheets workbook

The printable is laid out inside a box that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the two files are identical and neither one is scaled. The fillable PDF has real form fields. The workbook uses plain formulas only — SUM, IF, COUNTIF and the like — so it opens in Excel, LibreOffice and Google Sheets without anything breaking, and every calculated cell is grey so you can see which figures it worked out.

How to print

Download the A4 or US Letter file to match the paper in your printer, open it in a PDF reader and print at 100% — not "fit to page", which shrinks the writing space. Both files leave a 14 mm margin, which clears the unprintable edge on home printers. To print the online version with your entries in it, use the Print this sheet button, which prints only the sheet and none of the page around it. More on printing.

Questions

Does this replace a record kept by the instructor?

No. It covers private practice only. Paid lessons are recorded by the instructor; bringing this log to a lesson shows them what you have been practising in between.

How many practice hours are needed?

The sheet does not set a number. Some places require logged hours and some do not, and the figure varies. Enter a target the learner has chosen or one set by the rules where you are, and the sheet counts down to it.

Who can be the supervising driver?

That depends on the rules where you are, which usually cover age, experience and the licence held. Check them before the first drive, along with insurance for the learner in that vehicle.

What does the confidence score mean?

It is the learner's own rating from one to five for how that drive felt. Low scores against a skill show where to practise next; it is not a measure of test readiness.
