The same sheet, on screen. Totals and figures are worked out as you type, rows can be added or removed, and you can print it or download the completed version as a PDF. Everything stays in your browser — your entries are kept in this browser's own storage on this device, nothing is uploaded, and there is no account.

Who this is for

Everything that lives in the van, written down once. Each item gets its locker or cupboard, its weight and its value, so the sheet can total what the kit weighs and what it would cost to replace. It answers three questions: will it fit the payload, what do I claim if it goes, and where did I put it.

Caravan, motorhome and campervan owners checking what their loaded van weighs, listing contents for an insurer, or handing the van to someone else who needs to find things.

What this helps you track

  • Every item carried, grouped by category and by where it is stowed
  • The weight of each line and of the kit as a whole
  • The replacement value of each line and the total to insure
  • How the kit weight compares with your own payload figure
  • Items worn out or broken and due for replacing

How to use it

  1. Write the van, the date you compiled the list, the contents value on your insurance and your own payload figure from the handbook or plate.
  2. Work through the van locker by locker, writing each item, its category and where it lives.
  3. Weigh items on bathroom or luggage scales, or use the weight on the packaging, and enter the value it would cost to replace.
  4. The line totals and summary are worked out in the browser and the workbook; on paper, multiply across and add down.
  5. Tick the replace column for anything worn or broken, and redo the list after a big change such as a new awning or bike rack.

Formats

  • Printable PDF (A4 and US Letter)
  • Fillable PDF with form fields
  • Fill in online, saved in your browser
  • Excel / Google Sheets workbook

The printable is laid out inside a box that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the two files are identical and neither one is scaled. The fillable PDF has real form fields. The workbook uses plain formulas only — SUM, IF, COUNTIF and the like — so it opens in Excel, LibreOffice and Google Sheets without anything breaking, and every calculated cell is grey so you can see which figures it worked out.

How to print

Download the A4 or US Letter file to match the paper in your printer, open it in a PDF reader and print at 100% — not "fit to page", which shrinks the writing space. Both files leave a 14 mm margin, which clears the unprintable edge on home printers. To print the online version with your entries in it, use the Print this sheet button, which prints only the sheet and none of the page around it. More on printing.

Questions

What payload figure should I enter?

Your own, from the vehicle handbook, weight plate or a weighbridge ticket. The sheet supplies no limits; it only compares the kit total with the figure you write in. Remember that water, gas and passengers also count against most payloads.

Does this total the whole van's weight?

No, only the kit you list. For the full calculation with the van's own mass, water, gas and passengers, use the caravan payload and tow weight calculator alongside it.

Will my insurer accept this list?

That depends on your insurer. A dated list with values, and photographs of the expensive items, is the kind of record most people find useful after a loss. Check your own policy for what it asks for.

How is this different from a packing checklist?

A packing list is ticked off each trip. This is a standing record of what stays in the van, with weights and values, updated when the kit changes rather than every time you go away.
