Who this is for

A list of firsts with the dates left blank. The rows name the moments people tend to want written down; you add the date when it happens, where you were, who saw it and what it was actually like. There is not an age anywhere on the page, and the last rows are empty for the things only your family would think to record.

Parents and grandparents who would rather have one page than a thread of photographs, families keeping a record for a child to read later, and anyone who has tried to remember afterwards which month something happened in.

What this helps you track

  • The date each first happened, written down while you still know it
  • Where you were and who was there to see it
  • What it was actually like, in your words rather than a caption
  • Whether there is a photograph, and where it lives
  • Blank rows for the moments that matter to your family and nobody else's

How to use it

  1. Write the child's name and date of birth at the top; every date below then stands on its own without needing an age beside it.
  2. Fill a row in when something happens, not later — the date is the part that goes first.
  3. Say where you were and who saw it; that detail is what makes the page worth reading in ten years.
  4. Use the wide column for your own words. A sentence written the same evening beats a tidy caption written next year.
  5. Tick the photo column and note where the picture is kept, so the two halves of the memory can find each other.
  6. Use the empty rows at the end for firsts of your own, and the notes area for anything that needs more than a line.

Formats

  • Printable PDF (A4 and US Letter)
  • Fillable PDF with form fields
  • Fill in online, saved in your browser

The printable is laid out inside a box that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the two files are identical and neither one is scaled. The fillable PDF has real form fields. The online version keeps what you enter in your own browser and builds the completed PDF on your device.

How to print

Download the A4 or US Letter file to match the paper in your printer, open it in a PDF reader and print at 100% — not "fit to page", which shrinks the writing space. Both files leave a 14 mm margin, which clears the unprintable edge on home printers. To print the online version with your entries in it, use the Print this sheet button, which prints only the sheet and none of the page around it. More on printing.

Questions

Why are there no ages on the sheet?

Because babies differ enormously and a printed age turns a record into a test. This sheet holds the date something happened and nothing about when it was supposed to. Any question about development belongs with your health visitor or doctor.

What if one of the rows never gets filled in?

Leave it. A blank row means only that you did not write it down, or that your child did something else instead. The page is a keepsake, not a checklist to complete.

Can I change the rows?

On paper, cross one out and write your own beside it. In the browser version you can edit the labels and add as many rows as you like, then print or download the result.

Is one sheet enough for one child?

For most families, yes, with the blank rows at the end doing the extra work. Print a second one per child if you write a lot, and keep them together.
