The same sheet, on screen. Totals and figures are worked out as you type, rows can be added or removed, and you can print it or download the completed version as a PDF. Everything stays in your browser — your entries are kept in this browser's own storage on this device, nothing is uploaded, and there is no account.

Who this is for

What a baby actually costs, written down a line at a time. Each row takes the date, the item, a category, whether it is a one-off or something that keeps coming, what it cost and who paid — and the totals separate the things you buy once from the things you buy every week.

Parents working out where the money is going, families budgeting before a baby arrives, two households splitting costs between them, and anyone deciding whether the next item is worth buying new.

What this helps you track

  • Every purchase with its date, what it was and what it cost
  • A category on each line, so the spending sorts itself
  • One-off against ongoing, totalled separately
  • Gifts and second-hand finds ticked, so the cash figure stays honest
  • Who paid, where it came from and whether it was worth it

How to use it

  1. Write the child's name, the period and the currency at the top so every figure below reads the same way.
  2. Add a line as you buy, not at the end of the month — the small ongoing items are the ones that vanish from memory.
  3. Choose a category and say whether the item is a one-off or something that keeps coming; the ongoing column totals the second kind on its own.
  4. Tick the gift or second-hand box where nothing left your account, and put the value in the cost column only if you want it counted.
  5. Use the notes for whether it was worth it, which is the column you will thank yourself for the next time round.
  6. Read the totals and the summary figures at the foot; on paper, add the column up yourself.

Formats

  • Printable PDF (A4 and US Letter)
  • Fillable PDF with form fields
  • Fill in online, saved in your browser
  • Excel / Google Sheets workbook

The printable is laid out inside a box that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the two files are identical and neither one is scaled. The fillable PDF has real form fields. The workbook uses plain formulas only — SUM, IF, COUNTIF and the like — so it opens in Excel, LibreOffice and Google Sheets without anything breaking, and every calculated cell is grey so you can see which figures it worked out.

How to print

Download the A4 or US Letter file to match the paper in your printer, open it in a PDF reader and print at 100% — not "fit to page", which shrinks the writing space. Both files leave a 14 mm margin, which clears the unprintable edge on home printers. To print the online version with your entries in it, use the Print this sheet button, which prints only the sheet and none of the page around it. More on printing.

Questions

How much should a baby cost?

There is no figure on this sheet for that and there never will be — it depends on where you live, what you already have and what you are given. The tracker totals what you actually spent and nothing else.

What is the difference between one-off and ongoing?

A one-off is bought once: a cot, a pram, a car seat. Ongoing is anything that comes back round — nappies, formula, clothes in the next size, childcare. The sheet totals the ongoing lines separately so you can see the repeating part.

Should I put gifts and hand-me-downs in?

Log them with the gift box ticked, and leave the cost blank unless you want the value counted. It is useful to see what you did not have to buy, especially if you are planning for a second.

Can two people share one tracker?

Yes — that is what the paid-by column is for. Print a sheet each and keep them together, or share the browser version's printout, then settle up from the totals.

Does it include childcare fees?

It can, as an ongoing line, but the hours and fees sheet works those out properly from sessions and your agreed rate. Put the monthly figure in here and keep the detail there.
