What this sheet is for

Keep the single most asked-about piece of a vehicle's service history in a form a buyer can actually read.

Who it is for

Anyone who changes their own oil, and anyone who wants a record of it being done for them.

How to use it

  1. Write your own interval in the box at the top, from your handbook.
  2. Record the odometer reading, not just the date.
  3. Note the exact oil specification used — it is the detail people forget.
  4. Work out the next due reading and write it in.
  5. Note where the old oil went.

What is on the sheet

The layout is fixed at a size that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the A4 and Letter files are visually identical and print at full size on either. Rows are set at a height that an adult can actually write a date and a few words into with a pen — most printable tables are built in a word processor and never tested with one.

Questions

How often should I change the oil?

This sheet does not say, and be wary of anything that does. It depends on the engine, the oil, how the vehicle is used and what the manufacturer specifies. Your handbook is the answer; the sheet holds you to it.

Does a home-done oil change count as service history?

It counts for more than nothing, and a legible log with dates, readings, oil specification and receipts is what makes it credible.
