Who this is for

A year of money, reviewed in one sitting. Write down what came in, where it went compared with the year before, how savings and debts moved, and what you want to do differently next year.

Individuals and households who like to take stock once a year, often at New Year, a birthday or the end of a tax year, and couples who want one shared picture before planning the next twelve months.

What this helps you track

  • Every source of income this year
  • Spending by category this year beside last year
  • Savings and debts at the start and end of the year
  • What went well and what you would change
  • Three money priorities for the year ahead

How to use it

  1. Write the year covered, who is completing the review and the date.
  2. Gather bank statements, payslips and account balances for the start and end of the year before you begin.
  3. List each income source with this year's total, then fill in spending by category with last year's figure alongside if you have it.
  4. Enter each savings account and each debt with its balance at the start and end of the year.
  5. Note what went well and what you would change, then set three priorities with a first step and a date.
  6. Keep the sheet, printed or saved in your own browser, to read before next year's review.

Formats

  • Printable PDF (A4 and US Letter)
  • Fillable PDF with form fields
  • Fill in online, saved in your browser

The printable is laid out inside a box that fits both A4 and US Letter, so the two files are identical and neither one is scaled. The fillable PDF has real form fields. The online version keeps what you enter in your own browser and builds the completed PDF on your device.

How to print

Download the A4 or US Letter file to match the paper in your printer, open it in a PDF reader and print at 100% — not "fit to page", which shrinks the writing space. Both files leave a 14 mm margin, which clears the unprintable edge on home printers. To print the online version with your entries in it, use the Print this sheet button, which prints only the sheet and none of the page around it. More on printing.

Questions

Where do the spending figures come from?

From your own bank and card statements, or from a year of budget sheets if you kept them. Rough totals by category are enough; the aim is to see the shape of the year, not to reconcile every transaction.

What if I have nothing for last year?

Leave that column blank this time. Next year this sheet becomes last year's record, so the comparison builds from the second review onwards.

When is the best time to do it?

Whenever suits your records: the calendar year, your tax year or your birthday. Choosing the same point each year matters more than which point it is.

Should the priorities have figures?

They can, if you choose them, such as an amount to save or a debt to clear. The sheet sets no targets; write the ones you have decided on and the first step toward each.
